Origin of senator wear styles for men
Although the senator style has gained much recognition in all parts of Nigeria, the native outfit originated from the South Eastern and Niger Delta regions of Nigeria. What makes it unique is that despite being a native style, it is usually made with fabric materials meant for formal styles such as suits and jackets.
Multiple accounts have it that the senator style was made popular by Senator Anyim Pius Anyim, a former president of the Nigerian Senate between 2000 and 2003, under the regime of President Olusegun Obasanjo. Senator Anyim usually rocked the then unique style to virtually all functions he attended as senate president. This explains why the style, which has now become very popular, was given the name “senator”.
Senator styles for men: how they are crafted
As stated earlier, the senator style native outfit is usually made from suit or trouser material, and not materials like lace, guinea, ankara, or Atiku fabrics. As with any other clothing style, the style has undergone lots of slight modifications based on the preferences of the more-than-countable fashion freaks who feel proud sporting the style.
The senator style is no more than the typical native outfit that Nigerian men wear, but it has some peculiarities. First, it doesn’t bear embroidery, but rather a thin line of contrasting but cool design running in the midline over the chest and downwards. Some add vertical designs that cross the breast region. To show some class, these designs and the buttons placed over them are sometimes gold or silver in colour.
Second, the sleeve can be long or short depending on the wearer preferences and motives. The sleeve of the long-sleeved type ends in a cuff that bears holes for cufflinks, unlike the free-flowing hem usually seen on other types of native attires for Nigerian men.
Matching accessories for senator wears
The senator style isn’t complete without certain accessories. The most striking accessory is a matching cap or hat. And it goes without saying that you need to add the right pair of shoes shoes, wrist watch, ring, and probably a walking staff — as many people do.
